Everyone views academics differently, but after seven years of supporting students at Mastering It, we’ve found that success starts long before the first lesson. It begins with two foundational pillars: Attitude and Motivation.
These factors dictate how you approach your studies. Once these are in place, you can build the practical habits necessary for excellence. Here are five essential areas to focus on for your 2026 academic year.

1. Cultivate the Right Attitude & Motivation
Attitude is your “settled way of thinking or feeling.” Your emotions toward school may shift daily, so it is vital to anchor yourself to a clear motivation. Ask yourself: Why does my academic success matter?
Common motivators include:
- Achieving a specific GPA or average (e.g., an 80% year-end report).
- Gaining entry into a dream career.
- Mastering time management to free up more time for hobbies.
Takeaway: Identify your “why” now. It will sustain you when your daily mood doesn’t align with your goals.
2. Prepare Before Class
The secret to memory is repetition. The more you expose yourself to the material, the easier it is to retain. Start this process before class begins:
- Scan the headlines: The night before a lesson, look through the textbook chapter you’ll be covering.
- Swift reading: Spend five minutes reading the first few pages.
- Build the big picture: This gives you a mental “map,” making the teacher’s explanation much easier to follow.
3. Focus on Active Participation
Class time is your second exposure to the content. How you engage determines how much you’ll actually understand.
- Sit for success: Moving closer to the front naturally increases focus and reduces distractions.
- Ask questions: If you lack the confidence to speak up during class, write your questions down and ask the teacher privately afterward.
- Follow along: Keep your textbook open and take notes on what the teacher emphasizes as “important.”
4. Maintain Homework Discipline
Homework isn’t just a task; it’s an opportunity to apply what you’ve learned.
- Review daily: Go through the day’s lessons to ensure you truly understand the concepts.
- Summarize: For theory-heavy subjects like Biology, create brief notes or mind maps immediately after class. (See some summarising techniques in one of our previous blogs)
- Bridge the gaps: If a concept is unclear, use the internet or library resources to clarify it while the information is still fresh.

5. Establish a Study Routine
Don’t wait for “exam season” to start working.
- Use a visual calendar: Mark all test dates in your study area to avoid surprises.
- Prioritize understanding: By the time you sit down to “study” for a test, you should already understand the work. This allows you to focus on memorization and application rather than learning from scratch.
- Practice with past papers: This is the best way to identify gaps in your knowledge and get used to the phrasing of questions.
Take Ownership
At the end of the day, you are the pilot of your academic journey. While teachers, parents, and tutors are there to support you, your results will reflect your effort. Decide today how you will prioritise your studies—your future self will thank you for the hard work you put in now!
