Rest and Reset: A Guide to Starting the New Year Right

As the year winds down, the buzz around “new year, new me” is everywhere. But for many of us, the idea of entering January full throttle can feel exhausting. Between deadlines, responsibilities, and the endless hustle, how do you transition into a new year feeling refreshed and ready? The answer lies in resting first, then resetting intentionally. This is easier said than done, so we’ve broken it down for you.

Step 1: Rest Up

  1. Unplug and unwind
Take a deliberate break from the noise. Log out of social media, set boundaries around work or study-related emails, and embrace the quiet. This helps clear mental clutter and allows you to focus on the present.
  2. Catch up on those zzzz’s
If you’ve been running on fumes, prioritize restorative sleep. Aim for 7-9 hours each night and try to establish a consistent bedtime routine. It’s inevitable that we might have later nights and less routine during the holidays, but try and be consistent to get the full restorative benefits of a good night’s sleep.
  3. Savor the slow moments
Read a book, watch a feel-good movie, or enjoy a hobby you haven’t had time for. This isn’t about being productive; it’s about indulging in things that genuinely bring you joy and peace. At last, guilt-free chill time!
  4. Reflect on the year
Spend some quiet time journaling or reflecting. Ask yourself:
    • What were my biggest achievements?
    • What challenges did I overcome?
    • What lessons did I learn?

Acknowledging both the highs and lows will help you close the year on a note of self-awareness, and prevent you from falling into familiar, unhelpful patterns in the new year.

Step 2: Reset and Prepare for the Year Ahead

  1. Set realistic goals
Instead of vague resolutions which never materialise, focus on specific, attainable goals. Think:
    • “Save R500 by June” instead of “Get better at saving.”
    • “Exercise three times a week” instead of “Get fit.”
Break larger goals into smaller, actionable steps to avoid feeling overwhelmed and to give direction to your habits and routines.
    • Try making use of apps like Asana to help keep track of your goals!
  2. Declutter your space
A clean, organized environment fosters a fresh mindset. Sort through your belongings and get rid of what no longer serves you. Digital spaces count, too—clear out your inbox and organize files on your devices. Delete all those hundreds of Whatsapp images clogging up your phone, and uninstall all those apps you never use.
  3. Create a plan for balance
Juggling school, work, and personal life is tough, but balance is key. Use tools like planners or apps to map out your priorities and schedule time for rest, socializing, and self-care.
  4. Build healthy habits gradually
January doesn’t have to be a complete overhaul. Pick one or two habits to focus on at a time, like drinking more water or taking daily walks. Building consistency is more impactful than burning out on big changes.
  5. Reconnect with your purpose
Ask yourself why you’re pursuing your studies, career, or personal goals. Having a clear “why” can keep you motivated during challenging moments.

Remember: Progress Over Perfection

The key to a successful new year isn’t in flawless execution but in staying adaptable and resilient

So, as you wrap up this year, give yourself permission to pause. Rest deeply. Then, with clarity and intention, reset for the months ahead.
