Due to the lockdown last year (2020) most schools were closed for months on end, and when they did reopen many did not offer any kind of sport or extra curricular activities.
As well as social interaction, this is what kids seem to have missed out on the most over the last year: physical and mental stimulation outside of classwork.
Sport is an essential part of a child’s development. Not only does it teach them gross and fine motor skills, the importance of teamwork and obvious physical skill, it also allows them to express themselves and enhances their psychosocial development.
With no sport as an outlet for their boundless energy or for a mental break from their seemingly endless homework, kids were struggling to cope emotionally, mentally and academically.
Mastering Sport was started to specifically address these problems for George’s primary school children.
Twice a week we set up base at Ground Zero park and facilitate an hour of physical education, sports and games. Not only is this a valuable form of exercise for the kids but also provides an opportunity for social interaction and meeting new friends.
Our games specifically target gross motor skills, memory and problem solving skills, while our sports — including netball, soccer, cricket and rugby — focus on improving technique — with a hearty dose of fun!
